Sending a fax to Spain
Country code +34 and a nine-digit number: fax a PDF to a Spanish landline from your browser. Single pages cost nothing; longer files €3.99.
Spanish numbers never start with 0. Landlines begin with 9, occasionally 8, and the first digits identify the province: 91 for Madrid, 93 for Barcelona, 96 for the Valencia region, 954 and 955 for Seville, 976 for Zaragoza. Numbers starting with 6 or 7 are mobiles and cannot receive a fax.
Fax remains common in gestorías — the agencies that handle paperwork for individuals and small businesses — as well as notaries’ offices, private clinics, mutual insurers and many hotels.
One frequent mix-up: a “burofax” is a postal service run by Correos with certified proof of content. It is not a fax, and an ordinary fax cannot stand in for it when a burofax is what is required.
Select Spain and type the number without +34 or 0034, following the format shown in the table. Your first page is free, with no cap on how often; a PDF of two pages or more is €3.99 incl. VAT per fax. To keep a dated record of the transmission, add the PDF receipts for €2.99 incl. VAT — payable only if the fax reaches its destination.

Spain: who still receives faxes?
- Town halls (ayuntamientos) and local Social Security or SEPE offices sometimes still list a fax, but most procedures go through electronic headquarters (sedes electrónicas) and the electronic registry.
- Private clinics, health insurers (mutuas) and pharmacies still use fax for authorisations, reports and reimbursement paperwork.
- In the courts, fax has given way to LexNET, the platform used by lawyers and procuradores; individuals file at the court registry or through the authorised electronic services.
- Gestorías (agencies that handle paperwork for businesses and households), notaries and insurers still take signed documents by fax, depending on the office.
We never publish an organisation’s fax number: use the one printed on a recent letter or on the recipient’s official website.
The official digital alternative
Spain relies on digital identity: Cl@ve or an electronic certificate for the electronic headquarters of the Tax Agency (AEAT) and Social Security, the General Electronic Registry to send a filing to any public body, DEHú to receive official notifications, and LexNET for legal professionals.
Spain: time zone and office hours
| Time zone | Mainland and Balearics: UTC+1 (CET), UTC+2 in summer; Canary Islands: UTC+0, UTC+1 in summer |
|---|---|
| Difference with Paris | None on the mainland and Balearics; one hour behind Paris in the Canaries |
| Usual office hours | Public offices: mostly mornings (around 9 a.m.–2 p.m.). Many businesses break at midday and switch to a continuous morning shift in summer; a fax received on Friday after 3 p.m. often waits until Monday. |
Spain: frequently asked questions
- Is a burofax the same as a fax?
- No. A burofax is a Correos postal service: the document is printed and handed over, with content certification if requested. A fax travels over a phone line to a fax machine. One cannot replace the other.
- Do I need to include the province code?
- Yes, it is part of the number: enter all 9 digits, for example 91 123 45 67 for Madrid. The +34 is optional; do not add a 0 in front.
- Why is a number starting with 902 rejected?
- 90x and 80x numbers are special-rate lines (free, shared-cost or premium); the form only takes geographic landlines. Ask the recipient for their direct fax number, which usually starts with 9 or 8 followed by the province code.
