Sending a fax to Italy

Country code +39, keep the leading zero: fax a PDF to an Italian landline from your browser. 1 page free, live status, no account needed.

Italy

Italy has one quirk worth knowing: the 0 of the prefisso, the city code, is never dropped, even when dialling from abroad. Milan is +39 02…, Rome +39 06…, Turin +39 011…, Naples +39 081…. Every landline therefore starts with 0, while mobiles start with 3 — and those cannot receive faxes.

For dealings with public administration, PEC — Italy’s certified email — has largely taken over. Fax has not gone away, though: accountants (commercialisti) and notaries, medical practices and clinics, insurance agents and many hotels and holiday-rental agencies still use it for written confirmations.

In the form, pick Italy and type the number with its leading 0 but without +39; the table shows the accepted format. One page is free, every time; a longer PDF is €3.99 incl. VAT per fax, regardless of page count. The PDF receipts option (€2.99 incl. VAT) leaves you with evidence of the transmission and is only charged when it succeeds.

Italy: who still receives faxes?

Government
Town councils and local offices of the Agenzia delle Entrate, INPS or INAIL have largely moved to PEC and online personal areas, though some still give a fax for specific cases.
Healthcare
Local health authorities (ASL), doctors, labs and pharmacies still use it for bookings, medical reports and dealings with private facilities.
Courts
The online civil trial system (PCT) requires lawyers to file electronically; for practical matters, some court registries (cancellerie) still answer faxes.
Banks, insurers, firms
Accountants (commercialisti), notaries and insurers still accept signed documents by fax, for instance to report a claim.

We never publish an organisation’s fax number: use the one printed on a recent letter or on the recipient’s official website.

The official digital alternative

Italy’s certified email, PEC, issues legally binding sending and delivery receipts, putting it on a par with recorded delivery (Presidential Decree 68/2005). Add SPID or CIE log-in to the personal areas of the Agenzia delle Entrate, INPS and INAIL, the online civil trial system for lawyers, and the IO app for public notices and payments.

Italy: frequently asked questions

Do I keep the 0 of an Italian number?
Yes. In Italy the 0 is part of the landline number and is dialled even from abroad: +39 06 1234 5678 for Rome. Enter the number exactly as written, 0 included.
Can a fax stand in for a PEC?
No. PEC is equivalent to registered mail with proof of receipt. A fax proves that a transmission to a given number succeeded at a given time; the transmission receipt is useful evidence, but not equivalent.
Can I fax the Agenzia delle Entrate or INPS?
Their main channels are the online personal area (SPID, CIE), PEC and front desks. A few local offices still give a fax for specific cases: only use the number printed on the letter or form you received.
